The primary characters are toys in the room of a nine year-old boy, Andy, and the film is mostly told from the toys' point of view. Andy, his baby sister Molly, and his mother have smaller roles, along with the neighbor boy Sid, his dog named Scud, and his sister Hannah.
In 2003, the Online Film Critics Society ranked the film as the greatest animated film of all time. In 2005 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. In 2007, the film was ranked #99 on the American Film Institute's 10th Anniversary Edition of the 100 greatest American films of all time, one of only two animated films on the list, the other being Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The film is set for re-release in 3-D on October 2, 2009, leading up to the long-awaited release of Toy Story 3 on June 18, 2010.
Plot
The story begins with a boy named Andy playing with his toys, such as a Mr. Potato Head, Rex (a plastic dinosaur toy), and his favorite toy, Woody, a cowboy. He takes Woody into the living room and plays with him some more, with a short interruption talking to his mom about his birthday party later that day and the upcoming move to a new house. After playing with Woody, Andy starts helping his mom by carrying his baby sister to her. While he is gone, all the toys come to life.
Woody sits up on Andy's bed, shocked about the news of the birthday party being held soon that day. He lets all the toys know the coast is clear and then the movie shows many of Andy's toys in action going about their business. As Woody jumps down from Andy's bed, his friend Slinky, a toy dog with wheels in his feet and a slinky for a body, slides a preset checker board towards Woody, but Woody has him help him organize a staff meeting. While organizing the meeting, Rex tries to ambush Woody and scare him, but Woody is unphased, however he keeps Rex's hopes up by saying he was almost scared. In the meeting, Woody discusses topics like "moving buddies," and he tries to pass the news of Andy's party off as a side note, but the toys catch it anyway and become alarmed.
The party makes all the toys extremely nervous, wondering if Andy will get a toy that will replace them, especially with the news that the family will be moving soon. Woody sends the small green soldiers downstairs to spy on the party. The soldiers go about a systematic "journey" from Andy's room to a potted plant in the downstairs living room. Along the way, they get alarmed of someone coming and they freeze. Then Andy's mom walks by and steps on one of the toy soldiers, breaking off its plastic base. Afterward, the soldiers continue on, helping the broken soldier and setting up a stake out in the plant. They use a baby monitor to communicate with Andy's toys, using the code names "Mother Bird" and "Alpha Bravo," and tell them Andy's presents as he opens them. When all the presents seem to be opened, they begin to pack up, and Andy's toys cheer, but then Andy's mom pulls out a surprise gift from a nearby closet. The soldiers immediately try to warn the other toys, but Rex shakes the table that the monitor is on, causing it to fall off and the batteries to pop out. Then to make things more intense, Andy and his friends beginning running up to his room. The soldiers warn the toys, and the toys manage to put the batteries in back in time to catch the message. They all frantically return to their places just before Andy and his friends come running in. They all then run out, leaving the mystery present on Andy's bed. The present turns out to be a Buzz Lightyear action figure. Buzz does not seem to be aware that he is a piece of plastic, believing himself to be the a space ranger, on a mission to save the universe from Evil Emperor Zurg. The other toys take to him immediately, being impressed by his many features. Only Woody is unconvinced, showing jealousy towards Buzz, who might replace him as Andy's favorite toy.
